I find that there have been several discussions and views and points and counterpoints being made about the film….Good, if not great…but , let us be clear on what this film is…..a film on Friendship , a film on how a person can stay simple even when he has reached giddy heights , a film of a person who does not forget his past and a film of a simple village barber who does not feel like using old friends to relieve his difficulties, especially economic ones. இந்த முறை நான் கூறும் சம்பவம் நடந்து பல ஆண்டுகள் ஆகிறது. இன்னும் சொல்லப்போனால் பத்து, பனிரெண்டு ஆண்டுகள் என்றே சொல்லலாம். நான் ஒரு சிவாஜி ரசிகன் என்றும், எம்.ஜி.ஆர் அவர்களின் குடும்ப வக்கீலும், நண்பரின் மகன் என்பதும் தெரியும் என்று நினைக்கிறேன். 1975க்கு பிறகு நான் தமிழ்ப்படங்கள் பார்ப்பதைக் குறைத்து ஆங்கிலப்படங்களையே விரும்பி பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருந்தேன். அதனால் பல நல்ல படங்களை, ரிலீஸ் ஆன காலத்தில் பார்க்கவில்லை. திரை உலகிற்கு வந்த பிறகு இவைகளை ஒவ்வொன்றாக பார்க்க ஆரம்பித்தேன். என் குருநாதர் கே.பி. யின் படங்கள் உட்பட! இந்த லிஸ்டில் நான் ஒரு நாள் இரவு வீட்டில் அனைவரும் உறங்கியபிறகு ராகவேந்திரர் படம் பார்த்தேன். நான் இதுவரை தமிழில் எழுதியது இல்லை. முதல் பதிவே ஒரு நல்லவரை பற்றி இருக்கவேண்டும் , அதுவும் நம்மோடு இருப்பவராய் இருக்க வேண்டும் என்று முடிவெடுத்தேன். இன்னொரு காரணமும் உண்டு. நடிகர் திலகத்தை பற்றி எழுதலாம் என்றால் அதை ஆங்கிலத்தில் ஏற்கனவே எழுதிவிட்டேன். இப்பொழுது பேசப்படும் படம்…வர இருக்கும் படம் குசேலன்.! அதில் ஒரு சிறிய வேடம் எனக்குக்கிடைத்தது. என் நண்பர் இயக்குநர் பி.வாசு மூலமாக. இப்படத்துக்காக நான் சுமார் இரண்டு வாரங்கள் ஹைதராபாத் பிலிம் சிட்டியில் படப்பிடிப்புக்காக சென்று இருந்தேன். அப்பொழுது தான் அந்த அதிசய நபருடன் பேசி பழக நிறைய சந்தர்ப்பங்கள் கிடைத்தன. என்னவென்று சொல்ல? இப்படி ஒரு நபரை நான் சந்தித்ததே இல்லை! இனியும் சந்திப்பேனா என்று சந்தேகமாக இருக்கிறது. அவரின் எளிமையை காண பல சந்தர்ப்பங்கள் , படப்பிடிப்புக்கு இயக்குநர், 11 மணிக்கு வந்தால் போதும் என்று சொன்னாலும், 9 மணிக்கே வந்து எங்கள் அனைவருடனும் உட்கார்ந்து பேசிக்கொண்டு இருந்ததைச்சொல்லவா? On the 10th of July 2000 , I had the honour of organising a function to Release a Special PostalCover and cancellation for a number of people who were all the early Pioneers of Tamil, nay, Indian Cinema. They were Mr.Natraja Mudaliar, the man who made the first Feature Film in Tamil Nadu or should I say South India, just a few years after Phalke released his.The film being a silent film cannot be called a “Tamil” film can it? Then Mr. Raja Sandow one of our early Pioneer Directors, Mr.Raghupathy Prakash another one of the early greats and Mr.Narayanan , who set up the first “Sound” studio in Chennai thus ensuring that Tamil Films were made here and not in Mumbai or Kolkatta as was the practice. One of the questions often asked to me is why dont you act in films instead of DRAMAS…..I hate that description……ask any Stage person and he will cringe at the fact his efforts are likened to a TV serial.What takes place on Stage is a Stage Play and is called Drama by us in the South.
I have done close to a hundred films and people think I am ONLY in TV …..that apart the ultimate place to be is in Celluloid…that is where all actors want to go as it is a way to become immortal, as Kannadasan sang ….Naan nirandharam aanavan mudivum illai……A serial is popular momentarily , we are all recognised only so long as the serial is on Air…..who talks of Chiththi now ?…..so it is like a newspaper valid and useful for that day ONLY.
